F-E-L-I-C-I-A?
'Cause that's how I spell it!
I like to view every day as an adventure, and thankfully, that's pretty much how my life turns out to be.
The other day, was a major epic fail for me. Just...everything about it.
But the most major of the epic fail-age, was my computer issue.
You see, I had decided to upgrade the memory in my laptop. One of my simming friends, Brad, had graciously offered to help me with it, but being that I am stubbornly independent, I tried to do it all on my own.
I figured that if I just googled it, that I would come up with TONS of useful info.
..and I was right!
Google is my absolute best friend. And youtube is a close second. I feel like, between the two - I could probably perform a successful brain surgery on someone. (Volunteers?? :-D)
Luckily, changing out the memory in a laptop didn't appear to be brain surgery, exactly, so I decided to go it alone.
...'cause I'm a smart girl. And, I mean, what could be so hard about unscrewing the back of the laptop, popping out the old memory, and then snapping the new in. EASY CHEESY!
So, when the UPS man dropped my package off the other day, it was with great pleasure, that I just turned off my little laptop, and went to TOWN working on it.
I was really excited about this.
...until I opened it up. It didn't exactly look like the YouTube video had led me to believe it would. I think the first words out of my mouth were "WOAH!" I said it very quietly (almost siliently) though, because I didn't want my mom suggesting that I shouldn't mess with something that I don't know shit about. (I don't like it when people state the obvious. :-P)
I just pretended to know EXACTLY what I was doing. I did find something that looked very similar to how it looked in the video, and what I had in my package...so I just ripped it right out of there.
Alarms went off in my head when the new memory didn't exactly "snap" in there like I was hoping. However, I was very optimistic and turned my laptop on anyways. It couldn't have been hard, I *must* have done it right.
....right?
WRONG! SO WRONG!
Immediately, as my computer turned "on," it started beeping at me. An angry beep. A "BITCH, WTF WERE YOU THINKING" sort of beep.
Pretty humiliating.
I immediately went into something that I like to refer to as "panic mode." This includes lots of crying, a little bit of shaking, and mostly just running around pulling my hair and screaming. This happens quite a bit, as you might imagine.
I was sure that the beeping meant that my laptop was going to blow up at any given moment.
So, I did the only thing that I knew how to do. Emailed my friend as fast as I could, and hoped that I hadn't effed up anything royally.
Luckily, I hadn't. I was instructed to take the new memory out (which I had not done, I just left it there) but NOT WHILE THE COMPUTER WAS ON (which, admittedly, I *had* already done once, in an attempt to get the computer to stop beeping) and to turn my computer OFF (which, I realized, I could do just by pressing the button for a second. *slaps head*)
Finally, later that evening, after we tried everything possible to get it to work, even by putting the old memory back in...
I figured out the problem.
Y'see...at the time of putting my memory in, I was sort of scared that I was going to break it. So, I probably didn't use as much force when pushing it into the slot as I should have, and...umm...that *might* have been the reason that it wasn't working. But for now, we will just blame it on...umm...the weather? The cicadas? I don't know. It wasn't ME , though. ;-) I managed to get my laptop to stop beeping at me, and to run as smooth as silk. *pats self on back* Disaster averted!
It was at this point, that I felt like I really grasped the concept of working on computers, and that YouTube really COULD guide me through anything. Feeling on top of the world, and pretty darn full of myself, I suggested to my mom that I could just YouTube videos and figure out how to change out her graphics card, memory, and power supply that I had also ordered, instead of waiting on my brother to do it.
It was at this moment that she gave me the biggest "You are crazy as hell" look. Then she opened her mouth:
"Oh, HELL no! If *YOU* come towards *MY* computer with a screwdriver, I *will* tackle you!"
EEPS!
It was very scary, being threatened in such a fashion.
Needless to say, I didn't get to upgrade her computer. :-( Sigh, for my own mother not having faith in my abilities.
I settled for putting my new laptop desk together. I could have waited on my bro to do it, but PSSSH, why would I do that? I am a strong, independent woman!
...who MAYBE, MIGHT have put her desk together backwards the first time.
But, I'll never tell. ;-)
